Unions are expecting to get legal approval to implement a plan for 20 charter flights eventually to be performed by three of the airline’s Airbus A320 fleet. Crew members have agreed to be paid nothing as a way to contribute to the recovery of the ailing carrier and call the attention of would-be-investors. Mexicana and co-sisters Mexicana Click and Mexicana Link are in desperate need of estimated $250 million to exit bankruptcy.
Nuevo Grupo Aeronautico, the holding company of the three carriers, grounded the carriers Aug. 28, 2010, for the lack of liquidity. Later, the airlines were granted “concurso mercantil” status, which provides protection equivalent to Chapter 11 provisions in the US.
