Sukhoi Civil Aircraft on December 21 earned European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approval for the new long-range version of the Superjet 100. Known as the SSJ100LR, the regional jet boasts some 50 percent more range than the basic version. It has operated in Russia since 2014 and accounts for a quarter of all SCA delivery volume.
The type certificate changes provide for the increase of takeoff weight and range, allowing foreign customers to fly the airplane up to 2,472 nautical miles, compared with the previous maximum range of 1,646 nautical miles.
SSJ100LRs operate with Russia’s Gazpromavia, Yakutia and Yamal Airlines. Sukhoi business jet and special-purpose versions of SSJ100 also feature increased flight range.
Sukhoi said it expects the certification to extend its market prospects outside of Russia and the CIS, as it has with Ireland’s CityJet, the only Western European customer for the airline. CityJet ordered 15 of the airplanes in October 2015 and has so far taken three and expects five more next year.
