Allegiant Air suspends 3 routes from LAX

By Aug. 31, Billings travelers no longer will be able fly direct to Los Angeles International Airport on Allegiant, thanks to a lack of gate space at the California airport.

“We are always disappointed to suspend routes,” said Keith Hansen, Allegiant’s director of airports. “This situation is particularly disappointing due to the fact that it has been caused by facility constraints beyond our control.”

The Billings-L.A. Allegiant flight that has been offered for three years was busy, according to Kevin Ploehn, assistant director of aviation and transit at Billings Logan International Airport.

“It’s bad news, but it had nothing to do with Billings,” he said.

Allegiant was sharing LAX gate space with Delta Air Lines until Delta changed schedules and crowded the Allegiant flights out, Ploehn said.

Allegiant, a low-cost airline based in Las Vegas that flies to vacation and resort destinations, is offering full refunds to customers with reservations to the Los Angeles airport after Aug. 31.

The three Allegiant routes to L.A. that are being canceled connect to Billings; Pasco, Wash.; and Sioux Falls, S.D.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Florida-based Silver Airways announced it was halting its three-month experiment with direct service from Billings to Helena effective Aug. 31.
