If you heard a roar at San Francisco International Airport Thursday night, it was a small pride of lions rescued by Animal Defenders International. Four lions are on their way from a Bolivian circus to a free-range sanctuary in San Andreas, run by the Performing Animal Welfare Society. Bolivia made it illegal for circuses to use animals last year. The lions are the first to be saved as a result of the ban. They have lived their lives in a rusting cage on the back of a truck.
